The Philippines, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is always at risk from earthquakes. But now, scientists and experts are hoping for new hazard maps and innovative technology to better prepare for them and prevent loss of life.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and PHIVOLCS launched the Accelerated Earthquake Multi-Hazards Mapping and Risk Assessment Program (ACER) on July 23, 2025. ACER aims to produce faster, more detailed, and high-resolution hazard maps for the provinces, using AI, LiDAR drones, and geophysical surveys.
ACER has four projects:
Project OMEGA: Modeling earthquakes, landslides, and ground shaking
Project SIGMA: Verification and mapping of active fault lines
Project LUPA: AI-based mapping of land cover for better urban planning
Project LUPA: AI-based mapping ng land cover para sa mas maayos na urban planning
According to Arturo Daag of PHIVOLCS, it used to take about a year to complete a hazard map for a province. Now, thanks to AI and modern tech, it is expected to be expedited and will be available on the GeoRiskPH platform for public use.
DOST Secretary Renato Solidum said science and innovation are important not only to save lives but also the livelihoods of Filipinos. With smarter hazard mapping, the country will be better prepared for major earthquakes and other disasters.
