A Grade 8 student at Bambang National High School (BNHS), Nueva Vizcaya was beaten by five of his classmates after they cut class and had drinks near the school on July 8. According to the investigation, the students had a confrontation after the victim allegedly made negative comments, causing him to be dragged, slapped, and kicked.
A video of the assault went viral on social media, which was filmed by one of those involved in the incident. As a result, the BNHS leadership held an emergency meeting with the victim, students involved, their parents, barangay and municipal officials, police, and representatives from the Schools Division Office.
The school recommended the transfer of the five students involved in the incident. According to Dr. Orlando Manuel, School Division Superintendent of Nueva Vizcaya, the parents of the children admitted that their children made a mistake and are willing to comply with the school's decision.
Bambang Mayor Benjamin Cuaresma III requested an explanation about the incident from the BNHS principal. Meanwhile, Police Chief P/Major Randy Velarde said they will review the case as possible cyberbullying due to the uploading and sharing of the video online.
The investigation continues as attention is focused on bullying, harassment, and misuse of social media by young people.
