19-year-old student Sophia Marie G. Coquilla from the University of the Philippines was found dead in her home in Tagum City on the morning of July 9, 2025. According to reports, Sophia was stabbed 38 times, up from an initial count of 20. A thorough investigation revealed a violent motive behind the murder.
Sophia's house was forcibly entered. Several items were missing, including a laptop, iPad, watch, and cellphone. According to the police and SOCO, tools were found next to the body, including a dumbbell, grass cutter, bloody handkerchief, and two knives.
Two minors, aged 14 and 17, were arrested after the incident. One of them was seen on CCTV while the other two were found at a boarding house in the city. Some of the items stolen from Sophia were recovered from them. They also admitted to having robbed others before this incident. Police are still looking for the other two suspects, including the one referred to as "alias Roy."
In law, this is included in the crime of Robbery with Homicide based on Article 294 of the Revised Penal Code. This means that even if the robbery or murder occurred first, as long as there is a connection between the two, it can be said to be a crime.
