A 54-year-old grandfather who died in a accident on NLEX on June 18 was able to save his 2-year-old grandson. According to the Marilao police, when the trailer truck crashed under the Marilao Interchange Bridge, the girder fell on a vehicle carrying the victim's family.
In the midst of the tragedy, the grandfather hugged the child to save him as their car overturned. As a result, the child survived with only minor injuries.
The seven were a family from Parañaque and were on their way to Baguio to visit relatives. Four of the six survivors are currently recovering in the hospital.
The 31-year-old truck driver is currently detained at the precinct and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. According to him, he is ready to take responsibility for what happened.
A government official issued a statement saying that NLEX should be held accountable for the incident. This is the second incident on the same bridge, and there are plans to free tolls on the affected sections of the road while the situation is resolved.
