Bodega Cats in New York: A Favorite Tradition That's Illegal

In New York City, bodega cats are a favorite of many, but technically, they're breaking the law. The beloved felines found in many convenience stores or bodega stores across the city are known for lounging around the stores and interacting with customers. While they may seem harmless, state regulations prohibit animals from stores that sell food, so bodega owners can be fined if their cats are seen near snacks and drinks.

Why Do People Love These Cats?

Despite the legal risks, bodega cats are a symbol of New York's unique charm. Some say the cats help keep the store clean by keeping away common pests like rats and cockroaches. Others believe their main job is to attract customers. A favorite cat in Brooklyn named Mimi became famous after a TikTok video of her went viral with millions of views. The video helped build a connection between Mimi's owner, Asam Mohammad, and her customers.

A Symbol of Community

For many, cats are more than just pets—they also symbolize a strong community in New York City. According to Sydney Miller, who posted Mimi's video, cats help build connections with people, showing the special bonds that form in a big city. Mohammad, Mimi's owner, shared that Mimi's other kitten, Lily, has also become a customer favorite.

The Impact of Cats on Everyday Life

In a warehouse, Mimi's kitten, Lionel, has become a crowd favorite. He not only makes customers happy but also helps people in their daily lives. Mohammad's cousin, Ala Najl, shared that Lionel even helped her while she was fasting during Ramadan and feeling hungry. Lionel played with her, helping her forget about her hunger.

Bodega Cats: More than Cats

Cats aren't just pets; they're part of the warehouse experience. One shopkeeper, Salim Yafai, said his cat, Reilly, is so popular that customers are willing to buy him, offering thousands of dollars. While the price is ridiculous, it shows how important cats are to the community.
