The Department of Education (DepEd) has launched a new policy that will grant five-day wellness leave to all teachers and non-teaching personnel nationwide. The move aims to boost mental health and improve working conditions in the education sector.
According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, this benefit covers all eligible employees from central offices to schools and community learning centers, regardless of their employment status. This leave is separate from vacation and sick leave and can be used for mental health care, physical wellness activities, or simple rest.
Angara said the policy is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., which aims to promote employee welfare as part of the administration. “When we take care of our teachers and staff, our schools become stronger and the quality of education improves for our students,” he added.
According to DepEd Order No. 002, s. 2026, employees may take leave for up to three consecutive days or on separate dates within the year. They must also file an application five days prior to use, except in emergencies. It is also non-cumulative and cannot be cashed.
The policy also stipulates that information regarding mental health will be kept confidential, in accordance with the Data Privacy Act. The aim of this measure is to reduce absenteeism and turnover, while creating a supportive work environment for teachers, who are considered investments in the future of Filipino youth.
