Elon Musk, the founder of xAI, has unveiled his ambitious plan to build an AI factory on the Moon. The goal is to create AI satellites using advanced computing hardware, which would circumvent the energy and heat limitations here on Earth. In an all-hands meeting, Musk shared his vision of where the Moon would become the center of lunar manufacturing.
According to reports, Musk said that the Moon is important for the expansion of artificial intelligence, and he specified, "You need to go to the Moon." He also plans to use what is called a mass driver, a large electromagnetic catapult, to launch completed satellites into orbit. This is more effective due to the low gravity and lack of atmosphere on the Moon, compared to traditional rocket launches from Earth.
This news comes as Musk's strategy shifts, especially after the SpaceX and xAI merger. Previously, SpaceX focused on Mars colonization, but now Musk is more focused on building a “self-growing city” on the Moon in the next decade. This lunar base would be the foundation for larger AI compute clusters that can be difficult to run in Earth-based data centers.
While there is no detailed engineering plan or exact construction date, Musk emphasized that lunar infrastructure is key to making xAI competitive in the computing arena. The estimated timeline for the “self-growing city” is within 10 years, reflecting a rapid and ambitious move for the future of space technology.
