The death toll after a pile of garbage collapsed at a landfill in Cebu City has risen to six, according to the latest report from local authorities. Two more bodies of women were recovered from the rubble this morning, further deepening the tragedy that has shaken the community.
The incident occurred in Barangay Binaliw on Thursday afternoon, where a mountain of garbage suddenly gave way and buried nearby houses and facilities. Currently, 31 people remain missing, while 12 are confined to hospitals due to injuries sustained.
Search and rescue operations are continuing after rescuers detected possible signs of life in some parts of the rubble. The operation is comprised of firefighters, police, military, and disaster response teams who are constantly fighting against time to save as many people as possible.
Heavy rains made the operation difficult, especially at night, so a 50-ton crane had to be used to remove heavy steel, concrete, and other debris from the collapsed structures.
Meanwhile, the city government assured that an alternative waste disposal site is in place following the temporary closure of the landfill. Several locations, including those in the surrounding area, have been identified to ensure continuous waste collection and prevent further public danger.
