The 161-year-old San Juan Nepomuceno Parish in San Remigio, Northern Cebu is no longer usable after the structure was declared unsafe due to the 6.9 magnitude earthquake on September 30.
According to an official statement from the church, the damage to the old building is so severe that it cannot be repaired. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau also confirmed the presence of pits and holes under the church floor.
Because of this, the Archdiocese of Cebu will replace the old church and build a new one that is stronger, safer, and more stable for the next generation.

"This was not an easy decision. We understand the deep connection the community has with the church. Every stone and every chair has a story of faith and sacrifice of the people of San Remigio," according to a statement from the church.
As the new building begins construction in the coming weeks, everyone is encouraged to remember the memory and legacy of the old church.
