North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said they had deployed "special assets" against South Korea. This was in response to the growing US military buildup in the region, according to state media.
There are approximately ₱1.6 million (28,500 US troops) based in South Korea to deal with the threat from the North. Last month, the US, South Korea, and Japan conducted joint military exercises that Pyongyang sees as preparations for an invasion.
According to Kim, as the US-ROK nuclear alliance grows stronger, North Korea's strategic concerns also increase. As a result, they have assigned their special assets to guard key targets. He added, "the enemy should be worried about where their security is going."
In the photos released, Kim can be seen walking through a weapons exhibition with generals, while weapons such as missiles are on display. Last month, Kim also said he was open to talks with the US but would never give up their nuclear arsenal.
