President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed a law that will create an independent regulator that will oversee the safe and sound use of nuclear energy and radiation in the country.
Under Republic Act No. 12305 or Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act, the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM) shall be established. This agency shall be the primary regulator in all matters relating to the regulation of nuclear energy.
PhilATOM is tasked with protecting people and the environment against the harmful effects of radiation. It will issue licenses for nuclear activities and ensure the Philippines' compliance with agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
PhilATOM's work also includes overseeing the transportation, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials, as well as preparing for nuclear emergencies with the NDRRMC. Violators can be fined up to P100 million and imprisoned.
The law also prohibits the unauthorized construction, operation, sale, and use of nuclear or radioactive materials, as well as the improper disposal of radioactive waste.
