A man in New South Wales, Australia has been arrested after allegedly chaining his girlfriend to the bed to prevent her from “going out and having sex with someone else.” Police say the incident began in June or July.
The victim, 32 years old, was often chained and only removed from the chain to eat or use the bathroom. There were times when she was not even allowed to use the bathroom. The man also took her cellphone, wallet, and keys, and excluded her from family, friends, and work.
The suspect used a heavy metal chain attached to the woman's leg and locked to the bed. On August 5, the victim escaped while outside to check her balance at an ATM. She ran to a drugstore for help and was taken to the hospital where she was found to have broken ribs, bruises, and fractured eyes.
The suspect was arrested on August 6 and charged with several domestic violence-related charges including kidnapping and assault. He was not allowed to post bail. According to police, he has a prior record of domestic violence.
The suspect's lawyer said his client denied the allegations and said he had mental health issues. The man's mother said the couple were on good terms. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on October 8.
