A 57-year-old teacher died in a tragic accident in Mandaue City on Wednesday morning, July 9, 2025, while on her way to her school. The victim was identified as Reywena Velez Sorono, a Grade 5 teacher at Labogon Elementary School.
He was riding a motorcycle driven by Rene Bordario Misa, 54, when they collided with a stray dog on H. Abellana Street, Barangay Basak, at around 9 a.m. Due to the collision, Sorono and Misa fell to the road.
While Sorono was lying on the ground, he was run over by an SUV driven by Heinrich Lee Cañete Pilones, 18, from Liloan. Severely injured, Sorono was immediately rushed to Eversley Hospital in Mandaue but was declared dead on arrival. Misa also sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
DepEd Mandaue Superintendent Bianito Dagatan confirmed that Sorono was on his way to school when the tragedy occurred. DepEd Mandaue has also begun collecting financial assistance for his family and is requesting voluntary contributions from fellow teachers.
