The House of Representatives is adamant that the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte should proceed, even if public opinion is divided. According to Rep. Gerville "JinkyBitrics" Luistro of Batangas, it is Congress' duty to proceed with the trial, regardless of whether people's support is high or low.
A Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey found that 42% of Filipinos oppose the complaint against Duterte, while only 32% are in favor. Even though there is no evidence to show, 44% of those who responded to the survey believe that the Senate is delaying the process. Five months have passed since the impeachment articles were submitted to the Senate.
According to Luistro and Rep. Chel Diokno, the people have the right to see the evidence. Diokno added that the senators' vote is important, but the judgment of the people should also be heard. Despite some opposition to impeachment, most Filipinos still want a fair and open trial.
