Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN) experienced a major outage this weekend, which lasted from Friday to Saturday night. The outage, which lasted more than 24 hours, was one of the longest unplanned service outages in recent years. Affected services include account management, social features, and access to the PlayStation Store, causing frustration for many users.
Although the network has since been restored, Sony did not provide a detailed explanation about the exact cause of the outage. According to Polygon, a spokesperson for Sony Interactive Entertainment acknowledged the problem and assured users that services are back up. In response to the inconvenience, the company granted a five-day additional extension to the subscriptions of all PlayStation Plus members.
Sony's prolonged silence has fueled fears, especially among gamers who remember the infamous PSN outage in 2011, which lasted 23 days due to a major security breach that exposed the personal data of 77 million accounts. While there is no indication that this latest outage is security-related, many are unhappy with Sony's vague response.
Time-limited online gaming events, such as Bungie's Destiny 2 contests and Call of Duty promotions, were also affected, forcing developers to make adjustments for affected players.
