According to him, it is no longer helpful and instead burdens <strong data-start=\"649\" data-end=\"675\">Filipino families<\/strong> and slows down the development of tourism.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"720\" data-end=\"1190\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">In his statement on <strong data-start=\"745\" data-end=\"764\">February 4, 2026<\/strong>, Marcos said that the travel tax prevents Filipino families from <strong data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"888\">using their limited resources<\/strong> for basic needs or simply traveling to work, see family, or take advantage of other opportunities. \"<strong data-start=\"1032\" data-end=\"1171\">When travel is more expensive, fewer people move, fewer people spend, and fewer opportunities circulate in the economy.<\/strong>\" he added.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1654\" class=\" translation-block\">Marcos also explained that Presidential Decree 1183, which was implemented during the time of his grandfather, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., should be <strong data-start=\"1231\" data-end=\"1277\">repealed<\/strong>, along with the revised Tourism Act of 2009, to <strong data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1432\">remove fixed travel taxes<\/strong> on Filipino travelers. He noted that the current travel tax <strong data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1558\">contradicts the 2022 ASEAN Tourism Agreement<\/strong>, which seeks to eliminate travel taxes to facilitate inter-ASEAN travel.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"2125\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">According to him, government programs should be funded through <strong data-start=\"1736\" data-end=\"1761\">transparent budgeting<\/strong>, not through fees that overburden travelers. Currently, <strong data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"1867\">the Philippines is the only country in Southeast Asia that charges its own citizens a travel tax, ranging from P1,620 to P2,700 depending on the class of seat. Part of the collection goes to TIEZA, CHED, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for tourism and education.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2127\" data-end=\"2681\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Marcos believes that the <strong data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2183\">removal of the travel tax<\/strong> will encourage more <strong data-start=\"2214\" data-end=\"2250\">domestic and international travel<\/strong>, which will boost tourism sectors such as hotels, transportation, tours, and retail. \"<strong data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2468\">Travel is not a luxury for many Filipinos. It is part of the family connection and the livelihood of workers,<\/strong>,\" he concluded.
