Since then, he has been <strong data-start=\"551\" data-end=\"610\">given food, toys, and his own Instagram page<\/strong> by fans.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"913\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Kanyon is not the only one special: according to City Hall, there are more than <strong data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"728\">160,000 cats on the streets of Istanbul<\/strong>, regularly fed and cared for by residents of the city of 16 million people. These cats are <strong data-start=\"855\" data-end=\"910\">cared for with a religious devotion<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"1329\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Whether on the Asian or European side of Istanbul, or on the ferries that connect the two, cats can be seen <strong data-start=\"1032\" data-end=\"1129\">lying on restaurant chairs, strolling through supermarkets, or perched in shop windows<\/strong>. And they are rarely <strong data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1172\">troubled or chased away<\/strong>. \"Istanbulites love animals,\" says <strong data-start=\"1217\" data-end=\"1236\">Gaye Koselerden<\/strong>, 57, as she shows off Kanyon's corner, filled with toys, like a child's room.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1811\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Since the Ottoman era, many <strong data-start=\"1374\" data-end=\"1433\">stray cats have become beloved community mascots<\/strong>. In Kadikoy, a bronze statue of <strong data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1498\">Tombili<\/strong>, a cat that became famous on the internet for its iconic pose on a bench, was erected in 2016. In Hagia Sophia, <strong data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1617\">Gli<\/strong>, the tabby that was petted by former US President Barack Obama in 2009, is still remembered. In Topkapi Palace, the former residence of the Sultans, <strong data-start=\"1747\" data-end=\"1808\">the long-used cat flap<\/strong> was recently restored<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1813\" data-end=\"2316\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">According to expert <strong data-start=\"1836\" data-end=\"1853\">Altan Armutak<\/strong>, the abundance of cats in Istanbul is a result of the \"deep love of the Prophet Muhammad for them.\" When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, they noticed cats <strong data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2108\">waiting for food in front of fish stalls and butcher shops<\/strong>. Over the past six centuries, cats have remained in the city, and today, <strong data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2243\">City Hall manages their population<\/strong>, including the sterilization of more than 43,000 cats last year.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2318\" data-end=\"2699\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Despite everything, <strong data-start=\"2338\" data-end=\"2420\">people and cats in Istanbul live together as equals<\/strong>.
