According to emergency services, <strong data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"643\">21 people died<\/strong> while more than 70 were injured.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"679\" data-end=\"948\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The accident occurred when a train from <strong data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"757\">Malaga to Madrid<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"771\">derailed<\/strong> near Adamuz and crossed over to the other track, colliding with another oncoming train. Both trains were derailed, reported Adif, the Spanish rail authority.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"1248\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">According to a police officer, it was initially reported that <strong data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1016\">5 people were killed<\/strong>, but the number later rose to 21. Antonio Sanz, head of emergency services in Andalusia, said that <strong data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1160\">73 people were injured<\/strong>, and that the number could reach 100 because some passengers were trapped inside the carriages.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1634\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Witnesses said the carriages were <strong data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1319\">upside down and twisted<\/strong>, making it difficult to rescue people. \"We had to remove the dead before we could reach the living passengers,\" said Francisco Carmona, head of the Cordoba fire department. Another witness said the impact felt like an <strong data-start=\"1548\" data-end=\"1560\">\"earthquake\"<\/strong>, forcing them to use emergency hammers to get out.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1990\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">High-speed rail services on the <strong data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1720\">Madrid-Cordoba-Seville-Malaga-Huelva<\/strong> route were suspended throughout Monday. Adif has prepared <strong data-start=\"1779\" data-end=\"1824\">rescue and support areas at major stations<\/strong> for the families of the victims.
