This mountain range is important as a <strong data-start=\"462\" data-end=\"491\">protection against typhoons<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"495\" data-end=\"527\">natural carbon sink<\/strong>, but it continues to be degraded by various projects and activities.<\/p><p data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"1017\" class=\" translation-block\">According to <strong data-start=\"612\" data-end=\"640\">Nova Pe\u00f1averde Regalario<\/strong>, conservation officer of Haribon, widespread <strong data-start=\"686\" data-end=\"703\">deforestation<\/strong> is occurring in parts of <strong data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"755\">Rizal and Quezon<\/strong> due to projects such as roads, mining, and renewable energy. Despite a law protecting <strong data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"891\">more than 300,000 hectares<\/strong> in the northern part of the Sierra Madre, <strong data-start=\"945\" data-end=\"964\">illegal logging<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"968\" data-end=\"979\">kaingin<\/strong> or burning of land for farming still continue.<\/p><p data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1203\" class=\" translation-block\">From <strong data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1046\">2003 to 2020<\/strong>, up to <strong data-start=\"1061\" data-end=\"1080\">130,000 hectares<\/strong> of forest have been lost, or equivalent to <strong data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1134\">\u20b158 billion<\/strong> when translated into the value of trees and natural resources destroyed.<\/p><p data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1396\" class=\" translation-block\">Strict protection zones have been established to prevent re-entry of projects, but despite this, many operations continue in areas that should be protected.<\/p><p data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1657\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\" class=\" translation-block\">According to Regalario, the law must be strictly enforced and the indigenous communities living around the Sierra Madre must be supported to prevent the complete loss of the forests that serve as Luzon's shield against disasters.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/article><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ang Sierra Madre, pinakamahabang hanay ng bundok sa Pilipinas, ay nawawalan ng halos 9,000 ektarya ng kagubatan bawat taon, ayon sa Haribon Foundation.
