It began as a result of Ford's request for a small and fuel-efficient car after the oil crisis in the '70s. With the help of Mazda, this model was developed and Kia was later licensed to build it. In the Philippines, it is better known as the <strong data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1036\">Kia Pride<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1544\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The Kia Pride has two engines \u2014 1.1-liter and 1.3-liter \u2014 with power ranging from <strong data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1152\">62 to 72 horsepower<\/strong>. The chassis design is simple, with <strong data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1243\">MacPherson struts at the front and torsion beams at the rear<\/strong>, which is common in budget cars. In the Philippines, it was launched in <strong data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1320\">1990<\/strong> under the government's <em data-start=\"1334\" data-end=\"1356\">People\u2019s Car Program<\/em>, and the units are manufactured locally. The price was around <strong data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1458\">\u20b1350,000<\/strong> for the base model, an affordable price for the first car of many Filipinos.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1546\" data-end=\"1815\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Apart from being practical, the Kia Pride was also produced in the country for more than <strong data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1660\">13 years (1990\u20132003)<\/strong>. It was available in hatchback, sedan, and even wagon versions in other markets.
