data-end=\"528\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"352\">The<\/strong> Supreme Court (SC) decided on August 15 to uphold the Senate's subpoena against former Bamban Mayor <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"481\">Alice Guo<\/strong>, who is linked to <strong data-start=\"498\" data-end=\"525\">POGO and Chinese espionage<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"734\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Guo requested that the <strong data-start=\"580\" data-end=\"609\">Senate Committee on Women<\/strong> subpoena be quashed after she failed to appear at hearings. She claimed that it violated her <strong data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"731\">rights to due process and privacy<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"962\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">But the SC said that <strong data-start=\"759\" data-end=\"789\">the Senate's process was correct<\/strong> and Guo's rights were not affected. Furthermore, the investigation is part of the Senate's power to protect the public interest and respect the law.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"1269\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The SC also clarified that as a <strong data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1015\">government official<\/strong>, Guo's privacy is limited especially when it comes to matters involving <strong data-start=\"1085\" data-end=\"1109\">national security<\/strong>. It also affirmed that the Senate has the power to impose <strong data-start=\"1173\" data-end=\"1185\">contempt<\/strong> for Guo's flight from the country and refusal to answer a simple question.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1487\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Sen. <strong data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1319\">Risa Hontiveros<\/strong> welcomed the decision.
