It was a festival in our town. I still remember the many people, games, bands, street food, and fairs. It's been a long time since I've been home, so I missed the simple joys of life in the province.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1085\" data-end=\"1416\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">I was with my cousin Arnel. He invited me to play bingo at the plaza. Nothing, just a trip. I said, \u201cOkay, I haven\u2019t played bingo in a while.\u201d While we were playing, someone suddenly spoke into the mic\u2014the one announcing the call. When I raised my head to see who it was, it was like <strong data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1415\">time stopped<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1418\" data-end=\"1454\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">That's where I saw her\u2014<strong data-start=\"1438\" data-end=\"1453\">Kristine<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1456\" data-end=\"1773\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">She was emceeing at bingo. She was wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans, her hair was just tied up. But her presence was powerful. She was no ordinary woman. She looked like an actress\u2014actually, she resembled <strong data-start=\"1653\" data-end=\"1670\">Marian Rivera<\/strong>. But besides her beauty, there was something different about her. I can't explain it, but I felt like I was suddenly speechless.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"1861\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Arnel must have noticed that I was quiet. He suddenly said, \u201cWould you like me to introduce you?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"2182\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Of course, I was embarrassed at first. But because Arnel was naughty, he approached Kristine. And there we were, talking. Kristine was nice. Smiling. <em data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2030\">Simple but with a touch of history.<\/em> I asked if she had been an emcee for a long time. She said it was just part-time during fiestas. She helps her relative who organizes the fair.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2184\" data-end=\"2398\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Of course, I was embarrassed at first. But because Arnel was naughty, he approached Kristine. And there we were, talking. Christine was nice. He didn't impress. He was just a genuine person. And that's where my frequent visits to Tarlac began.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2750\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Every weekend, I go home. Sometimes, I bring pasalubong. Sometimes, I'm just there to eat kwek-kwek and fishballs with him. No socializing, no art. But I'm so <strong data-start=\"2738\" data-end=\"2750\">happy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2752\" data-end=\"2802\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">And at an unexpected time, <strong data-start=\"2781\" data-end=\"2801\">he answered me<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2804\" data-end=\"3000\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">I thought that was where the story would end\u2014happy and complete. But of course, not everything was that easy. When <strong data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"2943\">my parents<\/strong> found out about Kristine, they suddenly became cold.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3002\" data-end=\"3119\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAre you sure about him?\u201d my dad asked. \u201cHe didn\u2019t finish, son. He might just be a burden to you one day.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3121\" data-end=\"3295\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">My mom said, \u201cSon, I\u2019m not saying he\u2019s a bad person. But we just want someone on your level. It\u2019s a waste of all your education if that\u2019s all you\u2019ll be partnering with.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3297\" data-end=\"3572\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">It hurts. <strong data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"3364\">It's like they don't see Kristine's character.<\/strong> It's like she's lacking just because of her state in life. They don't know how she makes me happy. How kind and caring she is. And most of all, they don't know how much I <strong data-start=\"3560\" data-end=\"3571\">love her<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3574\" data-end=\"3829\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">I want to fight for Kristine. I want to shout that she is the one my heart chose. But <strong data-start=\"3662\" data-end=\"3715\">I also can't abandon my parents<\/strong>. They are the reason why I got to where I am today. <strong data-start=\"3785\" data-end=\"3816\">I owe them a lot<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3831\" data-end=\"4051\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Until now, I'm still here in the middle. Every night, I think. <strong data-start=\"3903\" data-end=\"3929\">My heart or my parents?<\/strong> I'm happy with Kristine, but what if my family doesn't accept me forever because of her? Can I do that?<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"4053\" data-end=\"4244\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But I also wonder\u2014what if I leave Kristine? What if she really is the one for me, and I just let her go out of fear? Can I live with a \"what if\" in my heart?<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"4246\" data-end=\"4431\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong data-start=\"4246\" data-end=\"4282\">I just want a simple life.<\/strong> I want someone to share my life with. I don't need someone rich or with a title. What I want is someone who is true and reliable. That's Kristine.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"4433\" data-end=\"4579\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">I hope, one day, <strong data-start=\"4451\" data-end=\"4487\">my family will accept him too<\/strong>.
