The meeting was held yesterday in Malaca\u00f1ang where President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his economic team discussed the possible impact of the war between Israel and Iran, especially on oil prices and its impact on poor sectors.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"1078\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">According to Garin, <strong data-start=\"764\" data-end=\"831\">oil prices dropped from $70 to $69 per barrel<\/strong> after US President Donald Trump announced a temporary ceasefire. While the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, Garin assured that <strong data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1077\">the impact on the economy is not worrisome if tensions do not escalate<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1380\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The government is preparing for the <strong data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1179\">worst possible scenario\u2014the closure of the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong>, which could cause an oil supply shortage. But according to the DOE, there are <strong data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1324\">other routes and alternative sources such as the US, Canada, and Brazil<\/strong> that the Philippines can use if this happens.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1712\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The government is also ready to <strong data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1461\">provide aid to transport and agriculture<\/strong> if the price of oil increases beyond $80 per barrel. A <strong data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1552\">P2.5 billion<\/strong> fund has been set aside to help drivers so that fares will not be increased. An oil company has also <strong data-start=\"1650\" data-end=\"1687\">provided a P1\/liter discount<\/strong> for PUV drivers.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1714\" data-end=\"2110\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Regarding the call to eliminate excise and VAT on oil, Garin said that this is <strong data-start=\"1804\" data-end=\"1865\">provided for in the law and requires action from Congress<\/strong>. Oil taxes amount to <strong data-start=\"1906\" data-end=\"1921\">P300 billion<\/strong>, which is used for roads, schools, and health services.
