With the adjournment of the 19th Congress, <strong data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"414\">the Senate and House<\/strong> failed to agree on a common version of the wage hike bill. As a result, workers were once again <strong data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"520\">left without a wage increase<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"981\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">According to a study by the <strong data-start=\"563\" data-end=\"582\">Ibon Foundation<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"611\">there is still a large gap<\/strong> between the current wage and the so-called \"<strong data-start=\"651\" data-end=\"670\">humanitarian wage<\/strong>.\" In <strong data-start=\"676\" data-end=\"692\">Metro Manila<\/strong>, the daily wage for a simple life should be <strong data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"718\">\u20b11,217<\/strong>, but the existing <strong data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"799\">minimum wage<\/strong> is only \u20b1608 to \u20b1645. In other regions, the required wage ranges from <strong data-start=\"886\" data-end=\"910\">\u20b1872 to \u20b12,030<\/strong>, but workers actually receive even less.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"983\" data-end=\"1429\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The <strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"997\">Senate<\/strong> has already passed a <strong data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1034\">\u20b1100 wage hike<\/strong> as early as February 2024, while the <strong data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1080\">House<\/strong> approved a <strong data-start=\"1098\" data-end=\"1116\">\u20b1200 wage hike<\/strong> in June 2025. If passed, this would have been the <strong data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1213\">first nationwide wage increase<\/strong> since the Wage Rationalization Act of <strong data-start=\"1253\" data-end=\"1261\">1989<\/strong>. But according to Senate President <strong data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1313\">Chiz Escudero<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1315\" data-end=\"1346\">this was not a priority<\/strong> for the government and <strong data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1399\">there was also no urgency certification<\/strong> from President Marcos Jr.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1818\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Economic managers have stated that the wage hike could potentially cause <strong data-start=\"1505\" data-end=\"1551\">increase in inflation and unemployment<\/strong>. For example, if the <strong data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1603\">\u20b1200 wage increase<\/strong> is continued, inflation could potentially increase by <strong data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1645\">2%<\/strong> and unemployment by <strong data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"1677\">0.6%<\/strong>. They added that most businesses are <strong data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1769\">micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)<\/strong> that may <strong data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1799\">not be able to afford the increased costs.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1820\" data-end=\"2288\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">But the <strong data-start=\"1847\" data-end=\"1866\">Ibon Foundation<\/strong> strongly objected and said that a <strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1915\">\u20b1200 wage increase is possible<\/strong> and will improve the livelihoods of families. According to their calculations, <strong data-start=\"1989\" data-end=\"2008\">this is affordable<\/strong> for companies and will not cause a significant drop in profits. They also called on the government to provide <strong data-start=\"2109\" data-end=\"2151\">subsidies, tax cuts, and other assistance<\/strong> for small businesses.
