And for my wife Mira and I\u2014money is always the reason.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"547\" data-end=\"760\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I am Lorenzo, 35 years old, married to Mira for five years. Our life is going well. We both work, have a three-year-old child, and we rent a small apartment in Cavite.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"973\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Mira is kind, cheerful, takes care of her children, and also works hard at her job as an admin staff. I work as a call center agent at night. We get along well in many ways\u2014but when it comes to money, we always get into arguments.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1246\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">It's not because of luxury. She's not a spendthrift on branded things or anything. But in reality, <strong data-start=\"1068\" data-end=\"1089\">we don't have any savings.<\/strong><\/span><br data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1092\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Every paycheck, it seems to just pass through our hands. Groceries, milk, diapers, electricity bills, water, internet\u2014everything has a reason. But it always runs out.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1584\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">One \u200b\u200bnight, as I was putting our son to bed, I noticed the notebook on the table\u2014the one I use for budgeting. I opened it, and I saw that he had crossed out some entries. He wrote:<\/span><br data-start=\"1519\" data-end=\"1522\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong data-start=\"1522\" data-end=\"1584\">\u201cShouldn\u2019t needs be more important now than savings?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1766\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">I knew Mira wrote it back then.<\/span><br data-start=\"1621\" data-end=\"1624\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">That's where I felt the weight. It wasn't just that she was being bullied\u2014she was being hurt. She felt like I was blaming her for our lack of money.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1768\" data-end=\"1918\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">But all I really want is <strong data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1841\">we're ready in case of an emergency.<\/strong><\/span><br data-start=\"1841\" data-end=\"1844\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">What if I lose my job? What if our child gets sick?<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1920\" data-end=\"2064\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I tried to talk to him the next day. I said, \u201cHon, maybe we can save even just P500 per paycheck. Even if it\u2019s small, just keep going.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2066\" data-end=\"2264\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">He said, \u201cSo what about spending now? Do you want to save for your child?\u201d<\/span><br data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2150\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">I was hurt. I didn't say we should save for our child. I just wanted us to have something to draw on in case something happened.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2312\" data-end=\"2561\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Since then, our friendship has cooled.<\/span><br data-start=\"2351\" data-end=\"2354\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">There are days when there is almost no movement. We eat together but it feels like we are not at the same table. The fighting becomes a routine. Even though I want to caress her, it feels like there is a barrier that I can't explain.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2563\" data-end=\"2783\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">It got to the point where I got frustrated and said, \u201cIf you don't want to save, it's up to you. I'll just do my own savings.\u201d<\/span><br data-start=\"2698\" data-end=\"2701\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">That's when she cried. She said, \u201cWhy does it seem like I'm the only one at fault in all of this?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2785\" data-end=\"2910\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I don't know how to fix it.
