I am Rica. But before I was Rica, I was Richard.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"686\" data-end=\"905\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When I was a child, I sensed something different about me. While my male cousins \u200b\u200bwere playing gunfights and basketball, I was busy cooking and curling my female cousin's doll's hair.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"1114\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">No sermons. No restraint. At home, my parents welcomed me. Mom, once even changed my skirt while whispering, <em data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1114\">\u201cThis is yours, just don\u2019t wear it outside.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1375\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">College. I became more courageous. I chose to groom myself, grow eyebrows, and show who I really was. That's where I met Kenji\u2014a Japanese man who visited our partner company in Manila. Kind. Quiet. Observant.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1535\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He didn't ask why I was like this. He accepted me. He looked me in the eyes, not at my body. With him I felt my first true love.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1600\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">One day, while we were having coffee in Makati, he asked me:<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1697\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1697\">\u201cIf you want to fully become who you are, I\u2019ll support you. Let me help you become... her.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1699\" data-end=\"1862\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">My world stopped. That was the dream I had been saving for for a long time but couldn't reach. We went to Thailand. There I underwent sex reassignment surgery.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1941\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">After I got home from the hospital, I looked in the mirror. <em data-start=\"1915\" data-end=\"1941\">\"This is me... Rica.\"<\/em><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1980\" data-end=\"2179\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But just a few months after that, Kenji changed. He stopped calling. He never returned to Manila. Last I heard, he had a new girlfriend\u2014a woman. A real woman.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2181\" data-end=\"2296\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I don't know what hurts more\u2014being left behind, or feeling like I don't even know you anymore.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2397\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I cry every night. I look for Richard. I look for Kenji. But they're both gone.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2578\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There are nights when I can't eat. I'll stare in the mirror, and what I see is a look that I should have chosen, but it doesn't feel like mine.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2785\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">I went to an LGBTQ+ support group in Shinjuku, where I was temporarily living. That's where I first said: <em data-start=\"2697\" data-end=\"2720\">\u201cI guess I made a mistake.\u201d<\/em> And for the first time, someone hugged me without asking any questions.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2787\" data-end=\"2874\" class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">One \u200b\u200bsaid: <em data-start=\"2804\" data-end=\"2874\">\u201cYou don't always have to be sure. But you can be true.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"2909\" data-end=\"3054\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I'm currently working at a small caf\u00e9 in Tokyo. That's where I met Tori\u2014also a Filipina barista, quiet but with tenderness in her eyes.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3056\" data-end=\"3216\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He didn't ask about my past. He didn't care what I was like. What I wanted, what I wanted to be. I'll love you more easily.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3544\" data-end=\"3749\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Today, I'm still Rica. There are still days of questions, of fear, of doubt. But I've learned that happiness is not measured by the size of the change in your body\u2014it's measured by how little you hate yourself.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"3751\" data-end=\"3936\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I can't bring Richard back. I can't bring Kenji back. But I found myself. And most of all, I learned to rebuild.
