In 1961, she left <em data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"447\">Manila<\/em> to look for work. After obtaining a <em data-start=\"495\" data-end=\"513\">police clearance<\/em>, she started working as a <em data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"560\">waitress<\/em> in a bar. There, she met <em data-start=\"597\" data-end=\"610\">Aniano Vera<\/em>, a <em data-start=\"618\" data-end=\"636\">married police officer<\/em>. He became her live-in partner, and they had a child.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"699\" data-end=\"1120\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">But she wasn't just a girlfriend \u2014 Lucila was <em data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"761\">hardworking<\/em> and <em data-start=\"765\" data-end=\"777\">strategic<\/em>. With her savings, she opened several businesses: a <em data-start=\"831\" data-end=\"848\">cocktail lounge<\/em>, the <em data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"876\">Pagoda Soda Fountain<\/em>, and a <em data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"901\">beauty salon<\/em> called <em data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"940\">Lucy's House of Beauty<\/em> in Sta. Cruz, Manila. At the age of 28, he is <em data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1000\">independent<\/em> and <em data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1016\">successful<\/em>. He also has a young girlfriend, <em data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1075\">Florante Relos<\/em>, 19 years old, whom he supports.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1573\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1145\">On May 28, 1967<\/strong>, everything changed. The next day, <em data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1212\">the dismembered body of a woman<\/em> was found in various places in Manila. A <em data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1271\">foot<\/em> cut into pieces and wrapped in a newspaper dated May 14 was found in Sta. Cruz. A few days later, a <em data-start=\"1397\" data-end=\"1406\">body<\/em> without a head and feet was discovered in a vacant lot near the Guadalupe Bridge. Using her fingerprint from the police clearance, it was confirmed that the victim was <em data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1560\">Lucila Lalu<\/em>.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"1575\" data-end=\"2161\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">First, <em data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1608\">Florante Relos<\/em> was arrested, but he had a strong alibi. <em data-start=\"1667\" data-end=\"1680\">Aniano Vera<\/em> was next suspected, but there was also not enough evidence. <em data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1759\">Jose Luis Santiano<\/em>, a <em data-start=\"1767\" data-end=\"1783\">dental student<\/em> who was renting the same building as Lucila's beauty salon, arrived on the scene. On June 15, 1967, he voluntarily surrendered and <em data-start=\"1904\" data-end=\"1912\">confessed<\/em> to the crime. But just a few days later, he retracted his <em data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"1994\">confession<\/em>, saying that he had been pressured by the police. Even so, according to investigators, he knew <em data-start=\"2085\" data-end=\"2094\">details<\/em> that only the <em data-start=\"2122\" data-end=\"2140\">real culprit<\/em> would know.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"2163\" data-end=\"2581\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong data-start=\"2163\" data-end=\"2198\">The case never reached trial.<\/strong> As time passed, the truth became more and more obscure. No one was ever officially convicted. To this day, the <em data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2345\">murder of Lucila Lalu<\/em> remains an <em data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2377\">unsolved case<\/em>. Her head has still not been found. Many have been investigated \u2014 including her two boyfriends, Santiano, and an unnamed businessman \u2014 but no one has been found guilty.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"2583\" data-end=\"2880\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Her <em data-start=\"2595\" data-end=\"2605\">tragedy<\/em> has inspired many films and stories. But more than just news, Lucila is a <em data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2717\">mother<\/em>, a <em data-start=\"2725\" data-end=\"2737\">businesswoman<\/em>, and a <em data-start=\"2748\" data-end=\"2757\">victim<\/em> of a crime that continues to haunt Philippine history \u2014 a story of <em data-start=\"2834\" data-end=\"2846\">love<\/em>, <em data-start=\"2848\" data-end=\"2861\">trust<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"2866\" data-end=\"2879\">betrayal<\/em>.<\/span><\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"2885\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2887\" data-end=\"2965\">&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ang kwento ni Lucila Lalu ay nagsimula sa Mapanique, Candaba, Pampanga.
