According to a new report by the <strong data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"579\">Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)<\/strong>, total debt payments from abroad are now at <strong data-start=\"586\" data-end=\"603\">\u20b144.7 billion<\/strong> (or <strong data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"624\">$799 million<\/strong>) \u2014 lower than the <strong data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"712\">\u20b198 billion<\/strong> (or <strong data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"734\">$1.75 billion<\/strong>) in the same month last year.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"769\" data-end=\"1069\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Of this total, <strong data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"807\">interest payments<\/strong> increased by <strong data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"826\">3.8%<\/strong> and reached <strong data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"857\">\u20b140.3 billion<\/strong> (<strong data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"875\">$719 million<\/strong>), while <strong data-start=\"889\" data-end=\"911\">principal payments<\/strong> or payments on the loan itself fell by <strong data-start=\"952\" data-end=\"961\">92.5%<\/strong>, from <strong data-start=\"968\" data-end=\"985\">\u20b159.4 billion<\/strong> (<strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1004\">$1.06 billion<\/strong>) last year to <strong data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1035\">\u20b14.4 billion<\/strong> (<strong data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1052\">$79 million<\/strong>) now.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"1071\" data-end=\"1411\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">According to <strong data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1100\">Michael Ricafort<\/strong>, chief economist of <strong data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1162\">Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC)<\/strong>, the big drop is because there is less <strong data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1234\">external debt maturity<\/strong> or principal payment this year compared to last year. This is also one of the effects of the government's efforts to reduce its reliance on foreign loans to avoid <strong data-start=\"1384\" data-end=\"1410\">foreign exchange risks<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1628\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">He added that the decrease in bills at the beginning of the year is a normal pattern. It is often the case that the budget deficit and debt are larger before the end of the year, then subside as the new year approaches.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\" data-start=\"1630\" data-end=\"1878\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The <strong data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1666\">external debt service burden<\/strong> refers to a country's total payments on its external debt \u2014 including <strong data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1768\">principal<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"1793\">interest payments<\/strong>. It also includes loans from the <strong data-start=\"1829\" data-end=\"1836\">IMF<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1838\" data-end=\"1852\">Paris Club<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"1877\">commercial banks<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bumaba nang halos kalahati ang foreign debt payments ng Pilipinas nitong Enero 2025.
