The number of Filipinos who have experienced hunger and had no food<\/strong> at least once in the past three months<\/strong> has increased, according to a new survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) and Stratbase<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

The survey conducted on March 15-20<\/strong> showed that 27.2% of Filipino families<\/strong> or 7.5 million households<\/strong> experienced involuntary hunger<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

This is the highest recorded hunger since the pandemic<\/strong> of September 2020<\/strong>, when it reached 30.7%<\/strong>. This is 7 points<\/strong> higher than the average hunger rate in 2024<\/strong> of 20.2%<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

Highest in the Visayas<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

The increase in the hunger rate is due to the increase in hunger in Visayas, Luzon (excluding Metro Manila), and Mindanao<\/strong>, while the data in Metro Manila<\/strong> remained the same.<\/span><\/p>

  • Visayas<\/strong> \u2013 33.7%<\/strong> (highest)<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • Metro Manila<\/strong> \u2013 28.3%<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • Mindanao<\/strong> \u2013 27.3%<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • Luzon (except Metro Manila)<\/strong> \u2013 24%<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    Of the 27.2% who experienced hunger<\/strong>, 21%<\/strong> had \"moderate hunger\"<\/strong> (experienced once or a few times), while 6.2%<\/strong> had \"severe hunger\"<\/strong> (often or always hungry).<\/span><\/p>

    In the Visayas, moderate hunger<\/strong> increased from 15.3%<\/strong> to 27.7%<\/strong>, while severe hunger<\/strong> slightly increased from 4.7%<\/strong> to 6%<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>
