On Wednesday, Microsoft announced a major <\/span>scientific breakthrough<\/b> that could usher in a <\/span>quantum computing revolution<\/b>. The <\/span>Majorana 1<\/b> is the first <\/span>quantum chip<\/b> powered by the <\/span>Topological Core architecture<\/b>, a new technology that uses an undiscovered <\/span>state of matter<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Using the <\/span>world's first topoconductor<\/b>, it can observe and control particles to create <\/span>qubits<\/b>, the most important part of <\/span>quantum computers<\/b>. The <\/span>topoconductor<\/b> uses a special material that creates <\/span>new states of matter<\/b>\u2014besides the three basic states: <\/span>solid, liquid, and gas<\/b>. As it can reach <\/span>a million qubits<\/b>, this chip will be the foundation for solving complex industrial and social problems that traditional computers cannot handle.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

To accomplish this, Microsoft used a new <\/span>material stack<\/b> consisting of <\/span>indium arsenide and aluminum<\/b>, which was created <\/span>atom by atom<\/b> to create <\/span>Majorana particles<\/b>. With a new <\/span>measurement methodology<\/b>, qubits can be <\/span>digitally<\/b> controlled\u2014a major step in the development of <\/span>quantum computing<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Because of this breakthrough, Microsoft is one of two companies participating in the <\/span>Underexplored Systems for Utility-Scale Quantum Computing (US2QC)<\/b> program of <\/span>DARPA<\/b>. The goal of this program is to build the <\/span>first fault-tolerant quantum computer<\/b> that can be used on a large scale in industry.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Why is <\/span>quantum computing<\/b> so important? According to Microsoft, scientists believe that <\/span>quantum computers<\/b> can help in <\/span>discovering why materials break easily<\/b> and <\/span>developing self-healing materials<\/b> for industry. It can also <\/span>facilitate the destruction of pollutants and plastic<\/b>, improve <\/span>soil fertility<\/b>, and <\/span>boost food production in extreme climates<\/b>. Additionally, with the help of <\/span>AI technology<\/b>, <\/span>quantum computing<\/b> can help <\/span>engineers, scientists, and companies<\/b> to speed up the design process and get the right answer to complex problems.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
