The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised the status of the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island to Alert Level 3 after its damaging eruption on December 9, 2024. The Kanlaon Volcano has been exhibiting seismic activity since June of current year, but remained at Alert Level 2 until December of last year. An increase in alert status from Level 2 (increasing agitation) to Level 3 (magmatic unrest) means \"a magmatic eruption has begun that could lead to more violent eruptions,\" according to Phivolcs.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

According to Phivolcs, residents and local governments in the affected areas are advised to take measures to ensure everyone's safety. People in communities near the volcano have been alerted to evacuate if necessary, especially in high-risk areas such as volcanic flows and ashfall. Travelers are also advised to avoid the affected zones to avoid problems with the possible expansion of volcanic activity.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

As part of their measures to protect citizens, Phivolcs will continue to monitor the volcanic activity and will continue to provide updates on their observations. Experts are strengthening their monitoring systems to immediately detect any changes in the state of the volcano. Also, the agency provided guidelines for local government units in planning prevention and evacuation measures. While continuing to monitor the situation, local governments are strengthening coordination with disaster response teams to ensure they are prepared for any possible danger caused by the Kanlaon Volcano.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
