This fact has existed for a long time and is not new. A Duke University study found that since the late 1980s, more than half of the lottery tickets sold each week have been bought by the poorest one-third of households.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By looking at this Business Insider chart, it's clear that the rich tend to play more when the jackpot prizes are higher. At the same time, the poorest sections of society tend to see smaller prizes and more easily win lotteries with lower prizes as opportunities.<\/span><\/p><p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The Economist published a statistical analysis showing that the poorest 1% of adults (sorted by postal code) spend almost 5% of their income from lotteries.
